The Complete International
Rental Car Guide
Avoid costly surprises. From insurance traps to IDP requirements, here's everything you need to know before picking up your rental abroad.
What Every Renter Needs
Valid Driving Licence
Your home licence must be valid. Most rental companies require it to be held for at least 1–2 years. Some restrict under-25 drivers with surcharges.
International Driving Permit
Required by rental companies in Japan, UAE, Thailand, Morocco, and 40+ other countries. Some companies in Europe also request it for non-EU licence holders.
Credit Card for Deposit
Nearly all international rentals require a credit card (not debit) for the security deposit. The hold can be $200–$2,000 depending on the vehicle class.
Insurance Coverage
Understand what your rental insurance covers — and what it excludes. Basic CDW usually excludes tyres, glass, and the undercarriage.
Mistakes That Cost Travellers Thousands
⚠️ Skipping the Pre-Rental Inspection
Always photograph every surface before driving away. Companies have been known to charge for pre-existing damage. Your photos are the only evidence you have.
⚠️ Wrong Fuel Type
In many countries, petrol (gasoline) and diesel pumps look similar. Misfuelling can cause engine damage worth thousands — and rental insurance typically won't cover it.
⚠️ Driving Outside Permitted Areas
Many rental agreements prohibit driving on unpaved roads, across borders, or into certain countries. Violations void your insurance.
⚠️ No IDP at the Rental Desk
Showing up without an IDP in a country that requires one means no car. Some companies allow a fee-based workaround; most do not. Apply before you travel.
Understanding Rental Car Insurance
CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)
Reduces your liability if the car is damaged. Does not cover the driver, passengers, third-party vehicles, or items left in the car. Usually excludes roof, undercarriage, tyres, and glass.
Super CDW / Full Coverage
Covers nearly everything, including tyres and glass. Significantly more expensive but eliminates almost all financial risk. Worth it for high-value vehicles or challenging driving conditions.
Credit Card Coverage
Many premium credit cards include secondary rental car insurance. This typically covers the excess (deductible) on the rental company's CDW. Call your card issuer before travel to confirm coverage and what's excluded.
Don't Get Caught Without an IDP
Most rental denials happen at the desk. Apply in 5 minutes and travel prepared.
