IDP Explained

IDP vs Driving Licence: What's the Difference?

They are two different documents that work together. Here is what each one does, when you need both, and which countries require an IDP.

One of the most common questions travellers have is whether an International Driving Permit replaces their driving licence, or if they need both. The short answer: you always need both. Here is why, and what each document does.

When You Need Both

In any country that requires an IDP, you are legally obligated to carry both your original national driving licence and your IDP. The IDP serves as a certified translation — it tells foreign police officers and rental agencies what your licence says, in a language they can read.

Think of it this way: your driving licence proves you are qualified to drive. Your IDP proves that a foreign official can verify that qualification, even if they do not read the language your licence is printed in.

The Golden Rule

Always carry both your original driving licence AND your IDP when driving abroad. An IDP without your licence is invalid. A licence without an IDP may not be accepted in countries that require one.

Countries: Licence Only vs IDP Required

Requirements vary by country. Some destinations accept a foreign driving licence on its own, while others legally mandate an IDP. Use our Country Checker for specific details, or browse the full country database.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an IDP and a driving licence?
A driving licence is issued by your home country and grants you legal permission to drive. An IDP is a supplementary translation document that renders your licence details in 12 languages for international use. The IDP has no legal standing without your original licence.
Can I drive abroad with just my licence and no IDP?
In some countries, yes. EU/EEA licence holders can drive within the EU without an IDP. English-language licences are often accepted in countries like the US, Canada, and Australia. However, many countries legally require an IDP, and most rental companies worldwide request one from foreign drivers.
Do I need both an IDP and my driving licence?
Yes, always. An IDP must be carried alongside your original national driving licence at all times when driving abroad. The IDP is legally invalid without the accompanying licence, and your licence alone may not be accepted in IDP-required countries.
Does an IDP replace my driving licence?
No. An IDP is not a standalone licence and does not grant any driving privileges on its own. It is purely a translation document that supplements your existing national driving licence for use abroad.
Which countries require an IDP?
Over 150 countries recognise the IDP. Countries that strictly require one include Japan, Thailand, UAE, Italy (for non-EU drivers), Brazil, Indonesia, and Morocco, among many others. Use our Country Checker to verify requirements for your specific destination.
