How Long Is an International Driving Permit Valid?
Understand IDP validity periods, compare 1-year and 3-year plans, and learn country-specific rules that affect how long you can drive abroad.
The validity period of your International Driving Permit depends on the plan you choose and the requirements of your destination country. Understanding these rules before you travel ensures you are always driving legally and avoids unpleasant surprises at rental counters or police checkpoints.
1-Year vs 3-Year IDP: Which Should You Choose?
Permio offers IDPs with two validity durations. The standard validity period is 1 year from the date of issue, available with the Digital Only, Standard, and Priority plans. For frequent international travellers, the 3-Year Pass extends your coverage for three full years from the date of issue.
The 1-year IDP is ideal for single trips or annual holidays. If you drive abroad once a year, you can renew annually. However, if you travel internationally more than once a year — or if you take extended trips spanning multiple months — the 3-Year Pass eliminates the need to renew before each trip and saves money over time.

Country-Specific Validity Rules
While your IDP has a fixed validity from the date of issue, some countries impose additional restrictions on how long foreign drivers can use an IDP within their borders. These rules vary by destination.
Japan
Japan only accepts IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention. Your IDP is valid for up to 1 year from your date of entry, but you cannot use an IDP for consecutive stays. If you leave and re-enter Japan within a short period, you may need to apply for a Japanese licence. Permio IDPs comply with the Geneva Convention and are accepted throughout Japan.
United Arab Emirates
The UAE recognises IDPs for tourist visits. Visitors can drive on their IDP for up to 6 months. Residents must convert to a UAE driving licence. The UAE accepts both Geneva and Vienna Convention IDPs.
European Union
EU/EEA licence holders do not need an IDP within the EU. Non-EU drivers (US, UK, Australian, Canadian, etc.) should carry an IDP when driving in EU countries. Most EU countries honour the IDP for the duration of your tourist visit, typically up to 90 days. Longer stays may require licence conversion.
Thailand
Thailand requires an IDP for all foreign drivers. The IDP is valid for the duration of your tourist visa (typically 30–90 days per entry). The IDP must be accompanied by your original national licence at all times.

When to Renew Your IDP
Your IDP should be renewed before it expires, especially if you have upcoming travel plans. Driving with an expired IDP is legally the same as driving without one, which can result in fines, refused car rentals, and voided insurance coverage.
We recommend starting the renewal process at least 7 days before your IDP expires, or before your next trip — whichever comes first. Permio's renewal process takes under 2 minutes and returning customers receive a 10% loyalty discount.
Important: IDP Cannot Outlast Your Licence
Your IDP is only valid alongside a valid national driving licence. If your home licence expires before your IDP, the IDP becomes invalid on that date. Always check that your driving licence will remain valid for the entire duration of your IDP.
