Driving Rules in Thailand
Drive on the Left
Thailand drives on the left side of the road. Vehicles are right-hand drive. This catches many visitors off guard, particularly at roundabouts and when overtaking. Take extra care during your first few hours on the road.
Helmet Laws Are Strict
Helmets are mandatory for both driver and passenger on motorcycles and scooters. Fines of 500 THB are common, but the real risk is head injury — Thailand sees thousands of motorcycle-related head injuries among tourists each year.
Speed Limits
Urban areas: 80 km/h (often 50 km/h in city centers). Highways: 90–120 km/h. Speed cameras are increasingly common on major routes. Fines start at 500 THB and increase significantly for major violations.
Drink Driving Enforcement
The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. During holiday periods like Songkran (Thai New Year), police set up sobriety checkpoints across the country. Penalties include heavy fines and imprisonment.

Thailand offers affordable car and scooter rentals, but having proper documentation is essential for your protection.
Required Documents
A valid IDP, your original driver's license, passport, and a credit card. Some local rental shops may not check, but major agencies always do — and you need the IDP for insurance to be valid regardless.
